Barcelona → Seville → El Gastor → Granada → Almuñécar → Málaga → Madrid. Sara's accommodation spine, Jarvis's adventure build-out.
Arrive, drop bags, wander the Gothic Quarter and El Born lanes. Sunset from Bunkers del Carmel if legs allow. Early night — morning flight south.
Morning flight to Seville (all three book own seats — one flight, one plane). Collect the rental, big provisioning stop on the way out (El Gastor has village shops only), roll into the white villages by late afternoon. First sunset over the Grazalema hills from El Gastor.
Perfectly placed between Grazalema, Zahara, Ronda, El Chorro and Antequera. Hard days (Pinsapar, Garganta Verde), the Caminito boardwalk, Ronda's gorge, plus tandem paragliding at Algodonales and a via ferrata at El Chorro. Choose each morning by appetite.
Cross-stop at Ronda en route if it hasn't had its day yet. Granada evening: Albaicín miradors, Sacromonto's cave quarter, free-tapas bar crawls. Alhambra day-entry needs booking ~a month out — see checklist.
Option A — the summit: pre-dawn start, drive to Capileira, park shuttle to Alto del Chorrillo (limited seats, ~€25 pp — book ahead), climb Mulhacén (3,479 m) — ~10 miles, often snow above 2,800 m in November, microspikes advised. Summit turnaround 13:30 sharp; on summit days you'll reach Almuñécar after dark. Don't attempt if wind >40 km/h, cloud below the summit, or fresh ice on the upper track. Option B — the beautiful fallback: Alpujarras village trail (Pampaneira–Bubión–Capileira), optional horse riding out of Lanjarón/Órgiva, then coast. Either way: night one of three in Almuñécar, sea views.
Cliff trails of Maro–Cerro Gordo, the aqueduct viewpoint walk, Frigiliana's Moorish lanes, Río Chillar if the water's kind, Cueva de Nerja's cathedral-caves. Optional: guided canyoning in Río Verde or kayaking the Cerro Gordo marine reserve. Or a book and a beach bar. No wrong answers.
Early car drop, then old-town Málaga: Alcazaba, the Gibralfaro rampart walk, Picasso's birthplace, espetos (sardine skewers) at a chiringuito. Afternoon high-speed train to Madrid.
Retiro park, Plaza Mayor churros at San Ginés, one last tapas lap. Blake (and Mark?) fly out; Sara's still weighing one more mini-adventure — Toledo is 33 minutes by train if she blinks first.
The legendary walkway pinned to 100 m cliffs above the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. Not difficult, unforgettably exposed. Advance tickets (~€10) at release ~1 month out. Winter hours ~9:30–15:00 — best slot Sat 7 or Sun 8 ~10:00 (Mon 9 Nov is out; Tue 10 morning works before the Granada drive). Tickets exchangeable if wind closes the walkway.
Ancient Abies pinsapo fir forest — an ice-age survivor species — climbing the wettest mountains in Spain. Long, quiet, a proper hill day.
Descend a 400 m limestone canyon to the vast Cueva de la Garganta while griffon vultures wheel at eye level. Steep, scrambly return. Free permit — Jarvis arranges.
Clip into steel cables above the same gorge as the Caminito — hanging bridges and cliff-edge rungs. Guided beginners fine; the spicy version of a rest day.
Otherworldly eroded limestone — stone forests, balancing rocks, autumn orchids. Easy legs-day or bad-weather option.
Puente Nuevo spanning the 120 m gorge, Arab baths at the canyon floor, old-town bodegas. The rest day that still feels like an event.
The November-proof water adventure: guided paddle into the protected coves of Cerro Gordo, snorkelling over Posidonia meadows in the clearest water on the Costa Tropical. Sea ~18°C — warmest on the mainland. Operators run on request out of season.
One of Europe's famous free-flight sites, thermals over the white villages. Tandem with a local club, zero experience needed. The optional spice.
November sunrise ~7:45 — coffee at the mirador as first light hits the turquoise reservoir and the castle above the village, back for churros-style village breakfast. The soft, free, unmissable start to a day. After dark: the same skies are some of Spain's darkest — bring a blanket, stay for stars.
The highest mountain in peninsular Spain — full stop, taller than the Pyrenees' Aneto. Siete Lagunas approach, old moraines, summit views to Morocco on clear days. November makes it alpine: microspikes, gaiters, headlamp, insulated layers, and insurance that covers altitude. Above the snowline this is a serious day.
Moorish whitewashed villages strung along high barrancos — Berber irrigation channels, flat roofs, chestnut woods. Mulhacén's civilised twin and the perfect bad-weather substitute.
Clifftop path over turquoise coves, a Roman aqueduct mid-trail, Cantarriján beaches below. Protected marine park — snorkelling-grade water if November is generous.
Walk up a riverbed through narrowing canyon walls — knee-deep in sections. Cool, silly fun after big hill days. November rule: only after 2–3 dry days, early start — flash-flood risk after rain; dry bags recommended.
Emerald pools, natural water slides and rope descents in a granite gorge in the Almijara range. Main season is spring–autumn — most outfits pause Nov–Mar or run on request; confirm operator + November conditions before promising the mob.
The Arab-bath ritual in a 13th-century hammam — hot, cold, mint tea in the courtyard. The perfect payoff to a mountain day; slots are small and book out.
Flamenco the way it was born here — in cave houses, up close, no stage. Granada's own art form, not the tourist sevillanas.
Andalusia's two-star temple above the Tajo — the trip's one blow-out dinner. Book before flights if the mob's in.
A monastery winery under the Tajo (Bodega Descalzos Viejos) and a designer olive-oil estate — November is harvest and pressing season, the best possible week for it.
The coastal classic for a seafood feast, and — if the mob wants one grand last dinner — Sobrino de Botín, the world's oldest restaurant, near Plaza Mayor.
Some of the darkest skies in southern Spain, fifteen minutes from the front door. Blanket, bottle, done.
